"Done".

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE:
ALMOST DONE:

First off, let me say, my ISO was set wrong, and that is why these photos are sub-par.  All I can say about that is: 1. I'm too lazy to retake them, and 2. I'm just glad this didn't happen whilst taking photos for someone else.

Secondly, I use the term 'done' loosely, only because there is a lot of knit-picky finish work to be done.  The hardware would all be installed, but the company we got our cabinets from needs to send us several new drawers due to differences in drawer height.  Those drawers are on their way this week, thankfully.  Also, we need to add the toe kick, fill nail holes, add trim pieces to the island, and seal the marble back splash one more time.

The stools came from Overstock.com, and I love, love, love them.  The kids think eating breakfast at the island is boss.  Oh, to be young again, and find such unencumbered pleasure from such a small thing. The warehouse pendants over the island are from Lowe's and they were something like $32 a piece.  I think they're really for garages and such, but who cares?

We also added a pantry, configured with cabinets which we placed right on top of the counters.  It has really been quite an asset to the kitchen.  With such an open floor plan, we don't really have a designated pantry.  There is a triple wide hall closet that I put back-up pantry staples in, but it's nice to not have to walk into the hall every time I want a bowl of cereal, which is about 35.9834 times a day.  I love carbs.  There, I said it.

Some open shelving was a must.  Since we ordered 'in-stock' cabinetry {which isn't really in-stock, by the way}, your custom choices are quite limited.  Which meant Jake had to get creative.  We purchased corbels through the cabinet company, but he had to make the shelves out of melamine shelving and trim that he picked  up from the hardware store.  Voila!  I love them!  He did a GREAT job!

We went with Silestone counter tops.  They are fantastic.  You don't need to seal them like granite, they don't stain, you can chop away on them, and set hot stuff on them.  They are great with littles in the house. I chose 'grey expo' because I thought it looked like poured concrete counters, which I love.  The industrial-esque faucet is from Lowe's.  It is the best, most practical faucet I've ever had or used.  It reminds me of the one we had in the pizzeria I worked at in high school. Fond, fond memories.

You need to think outside of the box sometimes.  Case in point, the over-the-sink light fixture.  It's really an outdoor fixture.  I've used these before in our old house, but I will always love them.  Bonus: they are less than $30 at Lowe's.  You really can't go wrong.  Simple bamboo shade is from Home Depot.  As you can see, I am not loyal to one home improvement store over the other.  Ha!

The marble subway tiles are from Home Depot.  In an ideal world, I would've gotten carrara marble counter tops.  However, they stain.  Enough said with four kids under the age of 10.  This was my way of incorporating the marble without it being on a used & abused surface in the kitchen.  All of our appliances are Kitchen Aid.  This go round we purchased a slide in range.  Holla for slide in ranges!  There are no gaps on the side for gross stuff to fall into.  No more cleaning the sides with a toothpick or fork.  Yipee!

As for the hardware, when it all goes up, it will look like this.  We went with black for contrast.  Classic knobs on the doors, and a more contemporary handle style pull on all of the drawers.  These are all from Lowe's.  Super cheap!  They also have brushed nickel if that's your preference.

It has been a labor of love to say the least.  With this project nearly finished, we can start hanging things on the walls!  You have no idea how happy that makes me.  No idea!  I still really want one of these to lean on one of the cafe shelves, a butcher block cutting board for the island, and a stainless shelf above the range, but, overall, I couldn't be happier.

If you have any other questions, let me know.  Email or comments, and I'll get back to you.  If I can get it together, I am going to do a budget breakdown.  Oh, the receipts.

I've never done this before, so, we'll give it a try.  I'm linking up...

  5. This is SO much like what I wanted for our kitchen...and so NOT what it looks like. But the hubs is the cook of the house, so I compromised...a lot. We do, however, have the same light over the sink! I'm so in love w/your bar stools.

Also, so glad you're still blogging. I should have said it sooner (like before that doubtful post a few posts back) but you're quickly becoming one of my faves, for reals. Awesome bloggers like you are the reason I struggle to update my own, even though it's just intended for family/posterity (so I see your point?).

    P.S. (I know, stop talking!)I bought & love Joanna Newsom's Milk-Eyed Mender, & it's all your fault.

  13. Linking over from T&J and I'm so glad I did....all these perfect little details I didn't see from just the one shot. I love that you took the backsplash tiles all the way up to the ceiling, love the barstools (metal and red? You can't go wrong in my book) and love that pop of lime from your Kitchenaid. The whole thing is positively delicious.

  14. I have very similar cabinets and were thinking they're looking dated. Not anymore! Your kitchen looks very fresh and modern. Looks like I have some styling to do!

  15. I love the pop of red on the stools. And they must be so easy to keep clean. Your kitchen looks fantastic, and I didn't even notice the "bad" quality pictures. I saw this at TatertotsandJello feature. Beautifully done.

  17. Fantastic job on your kitchen redo! I love all the finishes you picked. I didn't know that Home Depot had marble subway tiles. I'm going shopping!!! I had silestone in two of my last houses and it is as wonderful as you say. No maintenance; looks great. I also own the same stools in black from Overstock. Great minds think alike! Thanks for the inspiration.

What is to the right of your fridge...I'd love to see the other side of the room.

  23. Now this is a remodel! Love the before and after photos. I like how you explain all your choices and for what reasons. I agree the counters look like concrete and the backsplash lets you have your marble. The lime green stand mixer is like a piece of jewelry in the corner.
I am going to do a post on remodeling mid century ranch houses, which is on my design bucket list. Am wondering if yours is a rancher. If so, I would love to incorporate your kitchen and of course link back to you.
I love your blog BTW! ~Delores

  24. I have the ugliest kitchen ever and can't wait to redo ours-- this post is going in my inspiration folder. Great job! I only wish I had so much open space to work with...

In particular love the backsplash and the slightly industrial and clean but not cold feel of the whole space.

  28. Crazy! Our kitchen layout is almost the same, and we were just at lowes today with talk of turning out kitchen island and putting out stove in the same position as your's! I'm curious what the spacing is from the stove to the island (to allow for it to easily open and take in and out cookies).

    Absolutely perfect! Love it!

  38. Just found this De-lish Kitchen 4 blogs from where I started! You are adorable and inspiring. I just feel giddy and happy and excited! I live in a po-dunk town in Wyoming. I'm a designer, grew up here moved away, went to school and worked in Atlanta, New York, Georgia, met my husband in Florida and wouldn't you know it . . . he's from Wyoming and we came back. UGH! I love being by family, but I struggle trying to maintain ME and who I am when who I am so does not fit in here. So I try to keep my business thriving and stay true to my love of retro (crosley payphone ... i have one in my kitchen, just like yours!!!!) and great solid design. . . and please my client who so desperately wants to keep her silk flower collection. HELP!!!! I'm rambing. ANYWHO. Don't know you, but I LOVE YOU! You are a gem and I think you are freaking brilliant. I wish there were more people just like you in my life.

I currently have a 5, 4 and 3 year old that keep me 'inspired!' And a sweet patient husband that plays along!

  41. Saw you on YHL today - seriously - INCREDIBLE renovation! and so excited to hear you did it yourself. Seriously - it's perfect!

  42. Your kitchen layout is exactly the layout I want once we do our remodel....and I think OURS IS MUCH UGLYIER than yours was!!! Carpeted floors and all! lol.

You inspire me...I can't wait to get ours going. The big issue---$$$$$$.

    Someday!

  43. Popping over from YHL to let you know that I think you did a FANTASTIC job on your kitchen reno!! I'm in love with everything about it :)

  45. Hi Beth! Visiting from YHL, just wanted to come over and tell you how much I adore your kitchen makeover! You and your husband did such an amazing job on the transformation! I love the bright colors that you chose to accent with! Kudos on doing all the work yourselves, with kids and a dog nonetheless! Merry Christmas!

  46. GORG! {Over from Young House Love} You guys did a slam-bang job...love it! I love that little big of open shelving, because I've been contemplating how to incorporate something similar whenever we get around to reno-ing our kitchen, and it looks SO fabulous in your kitchen! And the marble back splash...beautiful!

  48. Im going to go ahead and live vicariously in my mind through you, mkay? This is so close to my dream kitchen!
Our home was built in 1860 and is so bad we entered it on an HGTV show to try to get some help making it over. It had FIVE doorways into it, NO counter space yet an original wall of storage cabinets. It has so much potential but we're living on a very limited income with two kids. Someday, some day...:)

    ReplyDelete
  49. over from YHL! i can't tell you how much i love it! it is exactly what i want. we are waiting on a short sale-8 months now! but if we ever get in we will demo the kitchen and this is just what i want. i have been so stressed over counters, really wanted marble but don't read good things about it and your marble backsplash is brilliant!!
    good job!!!!!!!!!

  50. Gorgeous kitchen! I'm not so experienced at DIY stuff, but am trying to head in that direction. Would you mind giving an estimate about how much the renovation cost all together? If that's too tacky, no need to answer. As I said, I'm new to all this.

  51. WOW! WOW! WOW! What a BEEEEEEYOOTIFUL kitchen! LOVE it! :-D

    Merry Christmas!

  52. That is a fantastic redo! Everything is just perfect and especially love that marble subway tile.

  53. I love your kitchen, the before layout is exactly like my house. My husband and I are planning a remodel in the fall and your after is the design we decided on but were unsure of how it would look. Thanks for the inspiration. I do have one question where did you get your cabinets from?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Love everything about this! Those stools (and stacks of bowls) are perfect. And I love the subway tile. Way to go!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hi! Love your remodel - especially the awesome stools! I'm curious about your floors - did you put them in yourselves? Was it hard? Where did you get them from and was the price reasonable? Thanks!!

  56. I saw the post on Young House Love and the style of the kitchen immediately caught my eye, you did a gorgeous job! Since we DIY'd our own kitchen I have become addicted to all things kitchen related. Then I read the text and saw you are also a Beth and thought you might find it funny that our reno's are so similar!!

We self built the house in 1993 so our kitchen wasn't quite as outdated but clearly we have a lot of similar decorating taste as well as sharing a name! Ours was a complete DIY as well, so satisfying but exhausting, as you know!

    Congrats its beautiful!

  57. Hello! I am newest follower. Over from YHL. Loving your blog. Hard core honesty mixed with rad eye for decor. I have been surfing around your site for the last hour. Nice to meet you :)

And I seriously love the red stools in the kitchen and the green chaise in the front room.

  58. Stopping in from YHL. You did a fantastic job on your kitchen. All your blood, sweat, and tears are so worth it, huh? Enjoy!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. WOW! Thankyou YHL and thankyou Beth! Your kitchen is almost exactly the same layout as mine and you've renovated it exactly the way I'd like to! My island bench currently houses a 6 burner stovetop and let me tell you, Its the stupidest place for a stovetop EVER. There's just no room to do anything!
You've inspired me to get out and get renovating!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I used to have the same range as your old one....sooo glad to get rid of it! I'm sure you feel the same! That thing was a beast.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Found you at YHL. The first photo with your red stools reached out and grabbed me around the neck and said, "YOU MUST BUY THOSE STOOLS!" I too have a white kitchen (relatively same layout as you, only in reverse), and have been wanting to give it some pop. I'd been thinking about changing my stools for a while anyway, and there's no time like the present! I popped over here to read more about your kitchen re-do and I must say I'm totally impressed. I love how you used lighting that wasn't originally intended for the kitchen. And good idea to get your fix of Carrera marble on the wall instead of the counter, with your young kiddos. I opted to use it on my perimeter cabinets, and it has received a bit of etching or chipping where we haven't been careful. But I still love it!

Congrats on an awesome remodel, and thanks for the red stool inspiration!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I absolutely love your kitchen! I am in the process of selecting pieces for our kitchen remodel and after seeing your kitchen I think there is a very good chance we will have similar bar stools in ours. I also really love your faucet and was hoping you could tell me what brand it is. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm obsessed with your kitchen!! :) I have actually been looking at those pendant lights at Lowes, and really needed a visual to make sure they wouldn't be too big or distracting. I'm reassured that they're perfect now! I also love the countertops, we've been going back and forth on granite or quartz, but I think we're leaning toward quartz. Thanks for the inspiration! It looks amazing!
